This sculpture was created out of cast of material from another sculptor in my studio. I saw this pile of clay on the side of their wheel and it spoke to me. I knew there was true beauty inside of it to uncover. I saw how I could unveil a regal, assured creature who represented strength and beauty. The bird nearby will symbolize opportunity.
The glazing for this piece was a challenge. It created from brown clay but I wanted this piece to be white. It is extremely difficult to achieve with a brown core. I am particularly proud of this glaze as it had ti been fired and glazed 3 times to achieve the surface I desired. Each time the piece is fired, there the risk to lose the parts where the glaze looked good. I wasn't satisfied with the first firing so I had to take the chance. Same with the second firing. Take a good look at the subtlety of colors. Sometime you do have to take a chance and take risk to achieve the desire result but also know to let go and accept the potential possibility of loosing it all.
This is my first sculpture where I added silver luster to it. Luster is a thin coat of metal applied to the ceramic which is then fired again to a lower temperature. That last touch was the cherry on the top. It brought everything together and I couldn't be happier with the results.
