When all is calm are they still singing behind the houses? Those distant voices, those thoughts that wonder about the mind?
Empty spaces like this embed a history we can only imagine. What was, what happened? Who and how was the space inhabited before this emptiness?
Is it the calm before or after the storm? Is it flooded over like a city never to be seen again, a surface to step onto and disappear into? Or is the water just an inch deep, stoking the ground, maybe soothing to walk across while walking towards the singing behind the houses?
The painting ‘still singing behind the houses’ has been composed alongside two other pieces: ‘tracing patterns’ and ‘drift’. While each piece can and does stand for itself, they also form a unit - a triptych in which ‘still singing behind the houses’ is the middle panel.
