'to square the circle': Try to do something that is impossible or very difficult indeed. Doesn’t that speak of our times?
In today’s world we have many circles to square. At times it feels like we’re missing something that ought to be plain to see. How do you smoothen those edges and make it all fit, metaphorically balance the books, create harmony, make sense?
Some questions just keep returning, no matter how old you are. I guess some circles just take a lifetime to square.
You can discover familiar items in and around this circle of daffodils and petals. The candle behind the figures is one that appears in many of my paintings.
A little light that may shine at the end of a tunnel, a glimmer of hope, a moment of warmth, the colours of the sun, the heat from the centre of the earth… we all have our own list.
This painting is from the body of work tired ‘the rite of spring’. It is the next episode of the story, following on from the previous 'things we do' (pandemic works).
'The rite of spring' is where we move ahead. With one eye on the past and moments of contemplation we carry our heads high and battle for metaphorical spring. Other people have now entered the stage, daffodils are blossoming, we stretch, we reach out, investigate, dance, aim to fly and communicate. …”
