8x6" Mixed Media on Paper
"Beauty Is Lost" by Chile Thomas
Medium & Technique
This is a mixed-media work combining collage and drawing/painting on watercolor textured paper. The left side of the central figure is constructed from torn and layered paper scraps — magazine clippings, patterned papers, and printed fragments — while the right side transitions into hand-drawn and painted illustration. This duality is central to the piece's meaning.
Composition & Imagery
A hunched figure dominates the composition, bending forward with head bowed, gazing downward at a single flower. The figure wears a green patchwork striped, colorful scarf or shawl. Their posture is one of quiet contemplation — or perhaps grief.
At the figure's feet blooms a small garden of pink and purple flowers, and a dark, vulture sits nearby, also facing the figure. In the upper right corner hangs a crescent moon with a golden spiral at its center.
Symbolism
The collaged back — built from scraps and fragments — suggests a self constructed from the world's discarded material, noise, and consumption
The phrase "beauty is lost" is visible written on a strip of paper within the collage
The act of bending toward a single flower amid the chaos reads as a search for beauty that still exists, even if barely
The dark bird beside the flowers adds a watchful, mysterious energy — perhaps a guardian or omen
Mood
The overall tone is melancholic yet tender — a meditation on finding (or mourning) beauty in a fragmented, overwhelming world.
