About:
Reflections is a photography project exploring the longing for heartened feelings and a sense of nostalgia — and the unrest we can feel when these sensations seem just out of reach.
This project began on a family fishing trip. Or maybe it started a long time ago. When I was younger, I spent a happy occasional holiday daytripping with family to partake in a completely pleasant and unfancy fishing trip. Overalls and worm digging. The trips weren’t without their yuck factor. I’d squirm when the fish did when removing a hook. Each trip, I had to steel myself before starting to scale my first fish. I still do, to some extent, but I’ve also learned to notice, respond with questions, and explore situations when I find myself reactive. I’ve gained some self-awareness.
These images aren’t about fishing, not really. They’re about remembering what may feel like happier times, amidst occasional discomfort that can brush past, by way of thoughts, fears, or tangible situations. They exist as an inspection of feelings, an introspection of closely held beliefs, and the sensation of letting go — of yearning, upset, and desire. They are about learning to feel and letting it happen. They are about coping despite change, or in light of it.
The prints shown are selections from a single variable edition of 5+2AP prints per negative, contact printed on 5” x 4” kozo.
