The Dynamic Edge is a transitional zone between two habitats. In this case, the meadow and the woods. In temperate North America, the transition from woodland interior to wetland, meadow, or grassland is among the most dramatic and most ecologically dynamic.
Meadows and grasslands are a lateral layer, verses the vertical layers of the understory and canopy of the woods. The meadow or grassland is most commonly the direct result of clearing an expansive area for agricultural or industrial purposes. Typically, they come about when the intended use of the area changed scope and was left to return to its natural state. These transitional areas are full of vibrant and diverse flora and fauna. Eventually, woody vegetation will take over and become the leaders within the ecosystem.
