Two regulars at Nora’s Diner in Wilson, Wyoming put their heads together over a newspaper at the counter. The many Tiffany-style lamps provide a glow and cast shadows into the corners of this historic log cabin establishment.
In order to create the dim lighting effect of the restaurant interior, I used a mask-and-pour technique. Pouring liquified pigment encourages the colors to mix on the paper and creates large gradient washes, suggesting space, atmosphere, and detail. The viewer's eye is drawn to the area around the subjects' heads while the periphery fades into the background.
