Tree roots branching patterns were the inspiration for this and other pieces in the series called "Nature's Tangles." The work grew out of two trends of technique and imagination:
1) exploration of paper-cutting, initially as a mixed media experiment with painting and cut paper and then subsequently as paper only, leading to tangles of tree roots in 3D
2) the increasing information about the multiple roles of tree roots, not just as the obvious support for the tree and source of food and water, but also as a means of communicating chemically and even sharing nutrients and water among trees via fungi, microorganisms and chemical signals.
The series is called "Nature's Tangles" because there are so many kinds of branching patterns in living creatures, including seaweed, circulatory systems and more.
