This large charcoal drawing is based on a huge tree in a park by the water in Balmoral. It is enormous, still very much alive, but so big that most of its leaves are high up, around the edges of the tree, so the branches are visible. This tree has a presence and people coming into the studio often recognised it from my painting. For me it has an architectural quality in that it creates a space that you feel as you walk under it, it is sculptural, but it is also very much alive. Magic.
