I painted this portrait on Paul's request, about 3 months before his death. The idiom of kintsugi (the Japanese art of repairing treasured ceramic bowls & other objects that have been broken with gold, making them even more valuable) fits a person with many scars. His scars are from diverse sources: damage from extreme bike racing and then cancer treatments. The result is the metaphor of kintsugi man, damaged and mended, showing the scars - in gold - of a richly experienced life.
