'scout'
extending forever, I see to infinity
sky and land merge while clouds
pass as ideas in my mind
their softness touches parched terrain
like cotton to aged skin, with
goosebumps rising skyward
colors blend into an earthy rainbow
blue, green, yellow, and white
sprinkled with peeks of scoria
I stand atop, under close watch
for friend or foe, on the lookout
seeking welcomes to avoid harm
I search the horizon in anticipation
although I miss what is right below,
inside the valley of my being
my dwelling place lies there,
the space I shelter, to store
deeply treasured possessions
I have spent much time in search,
anxious for what is to come
so little time on my home
enveloped within beauty,
I peer down inside my valley
and smile at what I see
a path leads me onwards,
meanders for me to follow,
a way to come home
now, when I climb up to observe,
as a scout, I see not bad lands,
but the place within me - home
