This is a beautifully composed view of a handmade broom outside my apartment in South Korea (circa 1970's). It was taken as a study in lighting technique. The strong side lighting from the bright sun shinning through the window opening at the far end of the hall on the right side dramatically highlighted the various textures present in the artwork. Subtle highlights and shadows bring out the abundant detail that is visible in the body of the handmade broom. The subtle detail in the woodgrain of the broken piece of wood used as a dust pan is accented as it lazily rests against the intricately raise detail in the painted concrete wall. The combination of lines, shadows, texture and lighting bring out unique and beautiful details along with the subtle shades of grey presented to the viewer that are normally missed as we go about our daily routines.
