This work is inspired by the arrest of Pussy Riot in Russia. The arrest of the Russian punk rock group garnered international attention and sparked widespread outrage over issues of censorship, political repression, and gender inequality.
The 19 appliqued linen rectangles, with their varying layered designs and colours, are symbolic of each woman's experiences, struggles, and resilience in the face of adversity. The symmetrical arrangement suggests solidarity and collective action, as women come together to confront injustice and assert their rights.
The painting is a statement of protest and solidarity, drawing attention to the ongoing struggle for women's rights across the globe.
