Three young Caucasian women in the painting represent the great migration from Europe to North America. Together, the two paintings, Flowers and Roots I & II, bring to mind the interconnectedness of migration experiences across different ethnicities and backgrounds. While migration experiences may vary, there are common themes of isolation, assimilation struggles, and barriers to acceptance and inclusion that transcend racial and cultural boundaries.
The distancing of Caucasian women from each other and from women of colour symbolizes the societal divisions and hierarchies that persist even within migrant communities. It reflects the ways in which privilege and power dynamics shape social interactions and relationships among individuals who share a common experience of migration.
