Do you seek rest on your journey? Do you seek to commune with fellow pilgrims, to glean wisdom from their travels?
This tabletop sculptural assemblage is made up of nine silkscreen-fused glass tiles mounted into a wooden base at angles to each other. They depict abstract blinkers and headlights, flicking upward on clear glass, densely layered to suggest the flames of a campfire.
Inspired by resting places on Sacred Pilgrimages, Garubba sought to make a work that suggested such rest utilizing imagery from the modern highway. In this case, blinkers and headlights offer the visuals and colors. Is there a modern, secular analog to such restful places to commune? Are highway rest stops missing an opportunity for communal gathering and meditative restoration? These questions fueled the creation of this work.
