CARLOS ALMARAZ, FOOL'S PARADISE, 1986, ART
Carlos Almaraz (1941-1989)
Almaraz is best known for his depictions of Echo Park and his freeway car crashes where he captures the L. A. urban landscape with explosive painterly textures and brilliant color. He was one of the founding members of the Chicano art collective, Los Four, along with Gilbert “Magu” Luján, Roberto de la Rocha, and Frank Romero.
His Silkscreen printed on wove paper is vivid, and has deep, rich colors. He transforms a seemingly mundane subject matter into a dynamic and engaging composition.
***In 2017, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, there will be a major comprehensive exhibition devoted to Carlos Almaraz titled "Playing with Fire." It will be a Getty-funded, multi-venue initiative that will explore artistic connections between Los Angeles and Latin America.***
