I was drawn into this piece by the churning waves and wind that whipped the sea foam into drifts of creamy white. Large white shapes in painting are quite powerful with the dramatic contrast they create that helps them develop into seemingly solid objects whether they are actually painted or developed as negative shapes through the painting of the surrounding forms while leaving the white paper or prepared canvas as is. I have always liked using these shapes for their abstract nature and mental puzzling that is required in their development. The whites in this painting are painted with subtle shifts in value that are somewhat lost in photographing art but give it radiance and volume when viewed first hand.
