Blue Ends Image: Woven with scrap warp ends that are the result of multiple projects being tied onto a loom, these warp ends are interwoven instead of discarded. Cotton dyed with indigo, merino wool and metallic filament are the threads that bind together in this piece, where the disparate scrap warp threads converge into heathered assemblage. The concept of waste is a construct that the organization Slow Factory argues is a colonial construct, and Blue Ends is a response to the wasted warp that cannot be woven on a floor loom. Inspired by artists who create form out of discarded materials, I reconsider the value of these pieces of thread through the act of care inherent in joining them together. The result is transformation of these warp ends from article of refuse into one of connection. Precarious yet strong, it was woven without any kind of structure, with the help only of hands and gravity. It speaks to our interdependence on this planet and how much we depend on one another for our continued survival.
