The underpinnings of water is reflected in the installation “Space between trees” as I had imagery from multiple rivers in mind while creating it: Potomac, Rappahannock, Danube and Nile. Some of this is in my photos, some was in my head as I was drawing and painting.
The original “space” I created in 2000 incorporated all photography and was about being able to transport my autobiographical modular installation almost anywhere and set it up with minimal effort or construction time. This version retained the autobiographical concept, but shifted toward my artistic practice. The structure is simplified to highlight the imagery and while this version is not designed for quick deployment, it still carries the idea of being a complete space to wrap the viewer in my influences pulled from many sources.
While I was designing the imagery to use, I found the layered experiments of my sketchbook interesting in themselves and not replicated in any of the other work I was presenting so I decided to expand this view into an enveloping experience.
With this piece, I hope to evoke the effect of wandering through nature as translated through the various media of my sketchbook.
