A tangle of young, rambunctious river otters pause in play to observe any visitor to their territorial pond. The shapes of long otter bodies lead the viewer across a network of textures and values of wet and dry fur to arrive at inquisitive, expressive faces. Playful and energetic, the North American River Otter is found throughout the United States and Canada. Hunted for centuries and sensitive to pollution, otters play an important role in a healthy ecosystem as predators of fish and aquatic invertebrates.
