Franklin Ridge, in the Columbia Gorge in Oregon, is where the Eagle Creek fire burned more than 50,000 acres stopped. The fire was started by a 15-year-old carelessly tossing a firecracker. Today the ridge is divided between healthy old forest and on the other side wide swaths of trees that look like giant blackened toothpicks. But under the burned trees, wildflowers exploded in color the following year.
