“We are a nation of human beings and it is a sad thing that the men we elect into office become caricatures of the ideals that divide us. It has become imperative to restore the authority of the public intellectual. The media and powers that be do the American public a grave injustice by assuming we are so shallow as to allow the most apparent differences to divide us: RED, BLUE, BLACK. The very name of the United States conveys both diversity and unity among the constituents of this great and beautiful country. I wish to challenge yet not diminish the intelligence and capacity of Americans to delve below the surface; below appearances, to gain facts and evidence regarding the unique position and perspective of other Americans. Bias, mass incarceration, and environmental apathy are a result of a limited capacity of understanding.
Many crimes are often a result of economic disparity, limited opportunities, and a class division. Yet we are each unique in our own experience and reaction to the trials and tribulations within a society that stands in perpetual contradiction of itself. We are a community that depends on individual contribution, we are so much more than a color or statistic. It is possible to be United within the United States of America.”
