“After years of being in prison, you start to see different things and things differently. Those who have never been subject to the criminal justice system often assume everything is the way it's supposed to be. Lawyers are noble, judges are wise, prisons are safe and the system is fair. I thought this once. What I believe now is that lawyers are greedy, judges are ambitious, prisons are corrupt and the system is biased. It's all about money. Many lawyers, like most government employees, typically work as little as possible for the most amount of money. Prosecutors look for cases they can easily convict, then lie and cheat in order to pressure defendants into signing plea deals strengthening their record, thus earning them promotions, eventually to sit behind the bench. Each inmate housed at BOP facilities costs taxpayers ~$43,000 each year. After the yearly budget is set, there is very little accountability regarding how that money is spent. Whoever can get their hands on it usually does. So, after all these years, my perspective is very different. Money and the pursuit of money determines everything. But as long as everything continues to remain just out of sight, it will not change.”
