I created this piece because I live in Boston, and I have been incarcerated with several men from this city. Boston IS strong, and there is a bigger world than your ‘hood. Many of us with few legit career paths seem to get stuck in our old ways, doing the wrong things in our communities. We never realize that there is a bigger world than that. I depict myself climbing a ladder to show that no matter how many times you fall, you gotta keep climbing. There is a long path in the eye that represents my prison sentence, where there is always somebody watching me. The pencil has been a big part of life since I entered the School of Reentry to earn my high school diploma.
