"The Juneteenth celebration is an awesome one because of the enormous moment (and people) it honors. When it was revealed that enslaved people were still in captivity, unaware of their freedom achieved, a whole 2 1/2 years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, many were appalled. Although not surprising, many people were disappointed at how their brethren could still be in chains after such a long fight for freedom was finally won.
This flag is my way of literally expressing those things that make up the finality of that fight to be free. The Juneteenth flag is awesome in its design, I think, because its parts show the hopes and desires of a people yearning for their emancipation and not getting it until two years after it was technically theirs. I love how each part gives specific justice to a work of art deserving of its recognition. My aim was two present the flag while reminding people of why the flag is a representation in the first place. And I hope that was achieved with this piece. Thank you."
