This painting is a puzzle that contains an encoded message. The top part of the painting is an encoding of the numbers 1 through 144 according to their prime factorization. For example, the symbol for 2 is a blue dot, so the 4th square contains two blue dots because 4 = 2 x 2. The 8th square contains three blue dots because 8 = 2 x 2 x 2. All the prime numbers appear as solid squares. Composite numbers appear as compositions of the hieroglyphic-like symbols for their prime factors.
The coded message on the bottom part of the painting uses the numerical symbols corresponding to ASCII codes to write out the Albert Einstein quote, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”
