In Florence, Italy, numerous lion statues can be found throughout the city. Statues of lions have been seen around Florence since the Middle Ages, legend tells that the Florentine Republic chose the symbol of the lion because this animal could tear apart the eagle, symbol of imperial power and of the rival Pisa. My favorite is the Florentine Lion statue in the Loggia dei Lanzi, located in the Piazza della Signoria in Tuscany. This sculpture is the inspiration for this composition.
