Deep Canyon River is the result of a memory from a drive in the northern California hills several years previously. I had taken a quick photo through a bug-splattered window as we drove - plus, the focus was terrible, the light poor - an awful photo from which to paint! Nevertheless, the image stayed with me and I kept going back to it. Finally, combining memory of mood and the photo's composition, I was able to paint that long-remembered vision that lingered in my mind's eye.
