Undercurrent - Disruption by Julia Purdy Image: This artwork was inspired by the writings of James Baldwin.

Despite the history of the United States, there is a growing undercurrent of change that is disrupting the traditional narrative. In this artwork, the text is combined and layered to represent a permeating, collective voice focusing on discrimination. Some of the text confronts the reality of facing discrimination, while other segments outline necessary steps for change. And some parts focus on the change that is happening. Throughout, there is a prevalent undercurrent of hope, similar to Baldwin’s writings.

In The Fire Next Time, Baldwin writes, “Everything now, we must assume, is in our hands. We have no right to assume otherwise. If we—and now I mean the relatively conscious whites and the relatively conscious blacks, who must, like lovers, insist on, or create, the consciousness of others—do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our country, and change the history of the world.”
