Horseshoe Crab by Julia Chandler Lawing Image: Horseshoe crabs have always fascinated me. I love finding them live on the beach, they are responsive to human touch and quite friendly. While vacationing on Block Island, Rhode Island, my daughters and I enjoyed the unique experience of participating in a horseshoe crab spawning survey with the Block Island Nature Conservancy. The surveys aim to track the population and spawning activity of these ancient creatures. Fun fact: horseshoe crabs are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than they are to true crabs. I much prefer them to spiders and scorpions!
