A birthday quilt created to celebrate my childhood friend, Claire Nantes', 60th birthday. The 48 vertical pieces represent the 48-year timeline of our friendship up to then. The curved line at the top is cut to evoke the feeling of the sand dunes on PEI, where we both grew up, and the many beautiful days we have spent on the beach together. The piece with text that says “art” denotes our early and continuing shared pursuit that has always kept us connected. Two of the vertical pieces are darker than the others, symbolic of times my friend has dealt with cancer (18 years in between). The 5 traditionally pieced ‘flying geese’ blocks below are the 5 decades that have flown by, bookended by solid blocks for the years before we met and the years yet to come. Colours were chosen to blend with Claire's summer house sunporch decor. Functional or hanging quilt.
AWARDS: 48 Years will travel to Ottawa in June for Quilt Canada's National Juried Show. It was accepted into the Modern Wall Quilt category.
