I painted a quiet landscape with a pastel sky and set it aside for a few days. When I looked at it again, I didn't feel satisfied with it. The painting had so much more to say. I had to let go of what was there and paint with more freedom. When I pushed out the "it should look like..." thoughts by painting over parts of the scene with fresh color and lines, it swirled into focus and came to life. The painting's a great metaphor for clearing your mind and starting fresh, for not always knowing what you're looking for until you find it, and for trusting your instincts.
Not my intention when I painted it either, but it reminds me of drives we took to my grandparents house when I was young. My siblings and I loved visiting them and were always so anxious to make that half hour drive pass quickly. So of course, we barraged my parents the whole time with "Are we There yet?" And yes, their house was down a winding drive hidden in the woods.
