At first glance, Marigold looks like a big, yellow abstract painting with squares at the bottom. But look closely. You can see straight through it; like it almost has a soul. I painted Marigold using acrylic paint applied with palette knives, brushes, and mark-making tools. The underpaintings of this abstract are an important part of its beauty. The layers and layers of intuitive marks, scrapes, and brush strokes give Marigold a sense of history and a past. The slightly aligned squares give this painting organization. Yet, the loosely painted loop adds a less structured shape. Marigold’s large conversation is its asymmetrical composition. The imperfections and subtle marks are its quiet conversation. Marigold was also juried into the 2025 Annual Juried Exhibition in Spartanburg. The submission process included five states. Of the 700 pieces of artwork the Artists Collective of Spartanburg received, 81 works were chosen, and my Marigold was one of them!
