The small boy in the painting is venturing ahead of his parents, walking one of the trails at Lake Norman State Park, which is a 1942-acre park in the county in North Carolina I reside in. The boy is not afraid of the unknown, he has his parents behind him, and his dog with him, and he is running ahead, since he loves an adventure. It is early enough in the spring that the trees have started to turn green, but not so far along as to become darker and heavier in the woods as will happen as the season progresses. I used the light, calming shades of blue and green to evoke the feeling of a slightly cool, slightly breezy, spring day.
