For so long I did not appreciate winter scenery where all we could see was trees and branches without leaves. When spring begins I’m thrilled as the leaves and colorful flowers begin to appear.
In January 2021 I started a portfolio about a nearby river, the Chestatee in Dahlonega, Georgia. As a result of making twenty-four paintings from photos taken at the river during freezing temperatures, I have come to appreciate the variety of content available when there are actually no leaves on the trees.
This painting was created in summer but now I notice it has appeared out of my memory of how intriguing the thin, empty branches create all sorts of shapes with their gnarly meandering.
This reminds me of a misty early morning visit on a day when rain is in the forecast. I love these days because there is so much solitude outside by a river on a cold day in winter.
