Commissioned for the RVA Kids First Collaborative, a program developed to serve the greater Richmond area's young people.
I was tasked to create artwork that reflects one of the non-profit organizations headquartered at RVA Kids First Collaborative hub and the group of young people I met with at the organization's site.
During my visit to the Boys & Girls Club Teen Community Center, the imbued com-
passion in their organization's community shined brightly. The youth beamed with
sheer delight as they participated in activities, worked together and spoke about
their dreams and desires for sports, film and photography, design, and
music– each with success right within reach.
In my work, the repetitive circles endow their shared unity, camaraderie, and
resourcefulness. The overlapping rings also draw attention to their distinct, colorful
personalities. I tried to embody their flowing energy and ambition. The windswept
film guides your eye around the composition pervaded with objects of their interest.
I visualized the ebb and flow of their passion, creativity, and studies. Then, I shaped
their identity through an androgynous adolescent form that any one of the teens
could see as a reflection of him/her/themselves.
