Woman Reading is a beautiful composition of curvilinear shapes and forms. The woman is placed in the center of the composition, engulfed in a variety of vivid colors arranged in yellow, green, and orange combinations of hues. The colors vibrate on the canvas in a lemon-lime flavored delightfulness. Norman W. Lewis’s Girl in Yellow Hat has similar abstract elements, but his composition is much more static in form. But Lofton’s colors illuminate the canvas in a whimsical display while Lewis’s girl is shown in deep thoughtful reading.
