Resting II is a bold, beautiful and dramatic depiction of a reclining nude in the tradition of Matisse’s (Nude: Souvenir de Biskra), Manet’s (Olympia) Modgliani’s (Reclining Nude), and Goya’s (Nude Maja). Lofton shows his veritable knowledge of the history of this genre. Voluptuous and sensuous, this figure languidly reclines while staring directly at the viewer. The face resembles that of an African mask. Lofton’s idea of the mask connotes “masking” in African American culture, not as much a nod to cubism and Picasso. In this composition the “gaze” is returned in direct confrontation signifying the ritualistic power of the mask to project outward not inward. The delicate linear outline creates a sensuous feel to this figure that diagonally reclines in the composition. The nude half is painted in black while the other diagonal half is in bright blue and yellow hues. Yet, there is a balance of color and form that always informs Lofton’s paintings. The overall mood of the work seems to be a celebration of feminine mystique and power.
