In the 1990s, Lofton became one of a group of expatriates living in Cuernavaca, Mexico. While there, he was influenced by the art and culture of the indigenous people who live there. The colorful folk art and handcrafts produced by the Huichol people, who live in the states of Jalisco, Durango, Zacatecas and Nayarit in Mexico, inspired his creativity. Evidence of this inspiration is found in this composition, which depicts two Mexican women of indeterminate age in an interlocking placement off-center in the painting. Lofton’s brilliance is always seen in such off-center placement which never leaves the painting unbalanced. One figure with legs tilted is balanced by objects on the right. Flat forms, geometric and biomorphic patterns cover the dresses of the two. A balloon floats to the right with a heart in its center symbolizes love, and a dove is a symbol of peace.
