In Leaning Lady, Lofton continues the tradition of the female nude in his painting. The linear outline of this figure pays homage to Matisse, Picasso and perhaps even Modigliani. Because he has enclosed this nude figure in a few blocks of three hues of deep rose, a bright yellow and blue; he creates an isolation and kind of intimacy that questions our “gaze.” Does the angle of the figure taunt our visual acuity, is she reclining or standing? Does the tilt of the head and sassy hand on her hips suggest an indignation to our intrusion? Or does the delicate linearity create a sensuousness and the pose a coquettish one? The artist keeps us guessing. Meanwhile his sense of design and knowledge of color harmony is unsurpassed.
