This piece demonstrates the diversity within a family. It features a collection of faces adorning a blue green background. They include men and women, who are old and young and painted in different sizes. Some of the subjects are wearing hats. The skin colors on many of the faces include dark and light shades of the same color as well as blues, greens, and stripes. Again, Lofton's "mask" are intended to protect the identity of the person wearing it. Lofton explained, "Actually, I paint colored people, people of many colors. But the features let you know that it's a black family." "These paintings are my life, as I have lived it. I never painted blacks hanging from trees. I never touched that stuff. My work is much more subtle. To me, that's the easy way out. My attitudes are in my stares. I look almost directly in the fact of the observers."
Signed J Lofton (in script), lower right corner.
