Ghanian artist Otis Kwame Kye Quiacoe executes expressive portraits and snapshots of Black figures against bold and vibrant backgrounds. Inspired by his own disparate experiences in Ghana and the United States, the artist’s subjects are depicted anachronistically, purposefully obscuring a fixed identity. Born in Accra, Ghana, Quiacoe studied art, focusing on painting, at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design. There, he met the artists Amoako Boafo and Kwesi Botchway, who have become key collaborators of his. In 2017, the artist moved to Portland, Oregon.
In 2020, he had his first show in the United States, titled Black Like Me at Roberts Projects in Los Angeles. Since, he has been included in exhibitions at American galleries such as Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York and Royal Nebeker Art Gallery in Astoria, Oregon. He is currently featured in the exhibition, Homecoming: The Aesthetic of the Cool, at Gallery 1957 in Ghana, on view until May 9, 2021.
