Artist: Alice Anderson
Alice Anderson is a multidisciplinary Anglo-French artist who studied painting at the
École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris and object studies at Goldsmiths
College London. Her oeuvre hybridises the worlds of technology and ancestral cultures
through paintings, sculptures and drawings generated through dance-performances,
each with ritual at their essence. This pairing of performance art with a tangible fine art
result seeks to spotlight the body as a vehicle of humanity within the contemporary,
technologically-inclined world.
Her performative works are created through repetitive gestures, sometimes coupled
with rapid breathing (hyperventilation) to give her access to a state of modified
consciousness. The ancestral culture of the Kogi people from Sierra Nevada in
Colombia is of particular interest to Anderson, as this group exists in a strong cosmic
harmony with their environment. Kogi concepts, rituals and ecological combats have
framed Anderson’s reflections upon changes in civilization over time.
The artist’s RANDOM CHROMATICS series represents collective performances of
‘memorization’ that arise from the recycling of wooden shapes from her prior bodies of
work, including ARCHITECTURE DATA and LA PUERTA AL CIELO Nabusimake, Colombia
(where she created shapes as reproductions of sacred Colombian architectural elements). The
RANDOM CHROMATICS process begins with the random distribution of the wooden shapes to color through dance. Subsequently, shapes will be collectively woven in slow, meditative gestures. The final phase is the assembly of elements. In the ritual of RANDOM CHROMATICS , shapes and colours meet randomly
to create surprising and unique final works of art.
