Wild Child speaks to the freedom of authenticity—the courage to embrace one's unique identity, to resist conformity, and to flourish on one's own terms. It is a celebration of individuality, self-discovery, and the wild beauty found in becoming who we truly are.
Created in 2002 during John McCaskill's Blind Contour period, the work emerged through intuitive, unbroken line and spontaneous mark-making. Drawn without looking at the surface, the portrait reveals itself through a tangle of charcoal contours intertwined with botanical forms that suggest roots, growth, and transformation.
Layered with Sekishu paper, acrylic, and oil, the work balances vulnerability and strength. The figure appears both concealed and revealed, emerging from the surrounding landscape with an untamed sense of self. Through its energetic line and layered surface, Wild Child invites viewers to consider the beauty found in embracing what makes us unique.
