This expansive work honors the legendary voyage of the Hōkūleʻa, the double-hulled canoe that completed a modern circumnavigation of the globe guided only by traditional wayfinding—reading the stars, ocean currents, birds, and winds. Constructed from layered woodblock prints and appliqué, the composition is rich in symbolic imagery: the patterned sea teeming with fish and a sea turtle, the islands marked by palms, seabirds in flight, and the radiant stars that guided the navigators.

Twelve distinct waypoint patterns anchor the design, representing the interconnectedness of ocean, land, and sky. The large central sail glows beneath the full moon, carrying the canoe forward as both vessel and metaphor—for cultural renewal, ancestral knowledge, and humanity’s enduring relationship with nature’s elements.
