History tells us that prior to World War II families of Japanese descent made up one third of the Mayne Island population. In April, 1942 a CPR steamship arrived to take approximately 50 men, women and children… Canadians of Japanese descent…to Vancouver where they would be sorted and sent to internment camps. Other Mayne Islanders were at the dock to send them off with sad goodbyes, wondering goodbyes. This painting asks the question “What would have happened if instead of saying goodbye the message had been “We won’t let them take you””?
