I create a range of work that is inspired by my joy, curiosity and awe of nature. It is a synthesis of art, design, environmental science, culture and craft.
MessageThe quilt design is inspired by a traditional tumbling block pattern, which has a long history tracing back to ancient Greece and mosaic floor design. The leaves were selected from four different botanicals.
The Dogwood and Maple leaves have unique interior color variations and pronounced veining. The Chokeberry leaves have more uniform color, although include spotting due to insect damage and late season rains, as well as pronounced veining. The quality of color of all leaves creates an electric glowing vibrancy of the piece overall. The leaf sections were strategically cut to control the placement and directionality of the veining, which when placed in proximity to other leaf sections creates movement. In some cases, the proximity optically reverses the directionality of the blocks, best demonstrated with the lightest chokeberry leaf (bottom right quadrant), which alternates optically as the top or bottom of a block.
