After 35 years as a dentist, doing freelance art projects on the side, I am finally a full-time artist. Focusing on a couple of my enduring obsessions, food and plants, I am exploring subjects related to the kitchen and gardening through my art.
From an early age I was fascinated with the drawings of the old masters - the anatomical sketches of hands, the light and shadows captured in the folds of fabric, the botanical examination of flowers and plants. Those remain fascinating to this day and are reflected throughout my portfolio.
Currently, I am captivated with chefs and the way they move in the kitchen. Hands are intrinsically interesting, as are the tools that cooks use. There's an effortless choreography to a chef's movement. I try to capture moments from the fast-paced dance that takes place in the kitchen.
My husband and I also love to garden. I use charcoal and colored pencil to depict the intense colors and interesting shapes that are found there. My Ripening series was inspired by our garden, where I find excitement in the first blush of color that emerges as our vegetables mature.
