La Familia is the proverbial starving artist piece, produced at a time when I had no resources except those cast off by other artists. The concept was a sketch for a proposed mural. Over time, it has become the touchstone of my ideal in composing subject matter into a visual whole. I retain possession of this piece to hold me to the origins of my mission as a Chicano Artist. The Chicano aspiration is to overcome the effects of racism and anti-immigration through absolute competence.
