- From A Bowl For Theo No. 5 - Counter-Composition
Inspired by Theo van Doesburg’s "Counter-Composition XV," this kiln-formed glass vessel transforms the principles of De Stijl into a dynamic three-dimensional form. The bold interplay of primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—juxtaposed with black and white geometric elements echoes van Doesburg’s departure from strict horizontal-vertical compositions, embracing the energy of diagonals and movement.
The vessel’s deep curvature amplifies the illusion of shifting planes, as the checkerboard pattern bends and distorts with the form. The glossy surface enhances the vibrancy of the colors, allowing light to interact with the glass, casting reflections that shift with the viewer’s perspective. The interior, marked by striking red, contrasts with the exterior's intricate lattice, creating a compelling dialogue between structure and fluidity.
This piece reimagines Constructivist abstraction in glass, where van Doesburg’s revolutionary approach to composition is no longer confined to a flat plane but comes alive in an immersive, tactile form.
